What Is a CMS?
First CMS stands for Content Management System. A content management system is server programming for a website that allows maintaining the content of the site without directly editing files and uploading them. Blogging software is a good example of a CMS. Software such as WordPress makes posting information to a website almost trivial once setup. Other CMS software packages you may hear about include Joomla, CMS Made Simple, and Expression Engine. If you would like the ability to change the content of your website, without learning a bunch of programming, this is definitely the way to go. Each system has its own learning curve with some systems being more complicated than others, but most are still substantially faster than learning web design from scratch.
Some CMS products are free while some cost a king’s ransom. Some are simple and some require a combination of zen, determination, and luck to do what you want them to do. Fly South can setup an existing solution for you, or write you a custom CMS that will be simple and easy for the things you want and need it to do without the 1,000 features you will never use and often add to the confusion.
